چکیده

—We develop a framework for model selection, using structured and unstructured linear time invariant control models, to describe human motor behavior for individual trials of a compensatory tracking experiment. We develop new metrics for quantifying performance and learning across trials using state space model parameters. Changes in metric parameter values obtained from the control model estimates are used to characterize learning. Classification of participants based on error performance provides a means to test how it relates to a set of model parameters that describe both performance and learning. We highlight the many benefits of using unstructured models, including the ability to quantify the evolution of the human control policy across trials.

No Enhancement of 24-Hour Visuomotor Skill Retention by Post-Practice Caffeine Administration

Caffeine is widely consumed throughout the world and appears to indirectly facilitate learning and memory through effects on attention and motivation. Animal work indicates that post-training caffeine administration augments inhibitory avoidance memory, spatial memory, and object memory. In humans, post-training caffeine administration enhances the ability to discern between familiar images and...

Brain activations underlying different patterns of performance improvement during early motor skill learning

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION Motor learning plays a central role in daily life and in neurorehabilitation. Several forms of motor learning have been described, among which motor skill learning, i.e. reaching a superior level of performance (a skill) through a shift of the speed/accuracy trade-off. During the first stage of learning a visuomotor skill, we observed differential patterns of evolution o...

Activation of fast sleep spindles at the premotor cortex and parietal areas contributes to motor learning: a study using sLORETA.

OBJECTIVE The present study examined whether slow and/or fast sleep spindles are related to visuomotor learning, by examining the densities of current sleep spindle activities. METHODS Participants completed a visuomotor task before and after sleep on the learning night. This task was not performed on the non-learning night. Standard polysomnographic recordings were made. After the amplitudes...

The effects of working memory resource depletion and training on sensorimotor adaptation.

We have recently demonstrated that visuospatial working memory performance predicts the rate of motor skill learning, particularly during the early phase of visuomotor adaptation. Here, we follow up these correlational findings with direct manipulations of working memory resources to determine the impact on visuomotor adaptation, a form of motor learning. We conducted two separate experiments. ...

Selective use of perceptual recalibration versus visuomotor skill acquisition.

Exposure to laterally displacing prisms is characterized by systematic misreaching in the opposite direction after prisms are removed. Other learning tasks involving altered visuomotor mappings can often be mastered by the subject with minimal resulting aftereffects. One variable that may account for this difference is the nature of the feedback provided to the subject: during studies of prism ...
